A few days ago, one of my favorite websites, PressPlay, posted two new video essays on the motifs of two of the most influential filmmakers of the last twenty years, Darren Aronofsky and Quentin Tarantino. Directors, writers, and actors use a variety of techniques to tell a story, going far beyond simply speaking predetermined words in front of a camera. And Aronofsky and Tarantino are excellent at using creative visual devices to add depth, style, and meaning to their films. Next time you watch a movie, pay extra attention not just to what the camera shows, but why it shows it. Enjoy!
