Over the past month, the clever gents over at Red Letter Media have been analyzing and debating the latest film in the Star Wars franchise, Rogue One. They first examined the movie on their standard web show, Half in the Bag, and they insightfully and not-so-delicately discussed many of the film's flaws. A week later, they released another video using founder Mike Stoklasa's alter-ego, the cleverly vulgar Mr. Plinkett, this time in a more traditional video essay, with sharp arguments and evidence from the film series.
The RLM guys received so much backlash from Star Wars enthusiasts for daring to question the artistic quality of the sequel/prequels that Mr. Plinkett then made another appearance just to take on internet commenters. Finally, to turn the whole thing on its head, RLM just yesterday posted a podcast video (spoofing obsessive fanboy devotion) of the guys absolutely adoring the latest film.
RLM is great because it explores nerdy things, but not in a nerdy way. And if they don't like something, they don't spout hipster "I hate anything mainstream" ennui; rather, they have intelligent and rigorous conversations with a humorous and critical twist. I personally didn't dislike the new Star Wars installments as much as these guys, but their arguments are hard to dispute. Watch each video in order to get the full effect of their Rogue One takedown. Be aware of some adult language throughout, and embrace the ridiculous laugh of Rich Evans. Enjoy!
