I've mentioned some of these before, but it's worth starting the new year with a few helpful grammar tips, especially ones in which you can be allowed some room for bending previous grammar rules. Now don't get me wrong, I am something of a drill sergeant when it comes to grammar in my classrooms. But most of the time, I am emphasizing clarity and the proper role of grammar in helping students achieve it. Clarity is the most important quality in writing, but when it comes to hard-and-fast grammar rules, sometimes what we've been taught in school isn't as important as we think.
