An interesting piece appeared on the pop culture/comedy site Cracked this past week. It analyzes what makes an effective movie trailer and why so many of them seem so similar. The author has a few ideas, some of which may surprise you, such as the notion that we like trailers that follow a predictable formula and that we actually like spoilers. Trailers have also become mini-movies themselves. All of these are at work in enticing us to check out the new film.
These thoughts echo a similar study on The Atlantic website back in November, which arrived at a similar conclusion regarding the public’s affinity for repetitive pop music. According to the research, we have no one to blame but ourselves. We may say we like edgy, ground-breaking, and original, but it turns out we like familiarity more (sadly). I guess if you want something new and creative, better not wait for someone else to do the creating. Get out there and do it yourself...and then share it with me!
