I never had to read many plays in school. And once I got to grad school, my teaching and research expertise focused on novels, short fiction, and film. Sure, I’ve read all the biggies that every high school or college student reads, and I’ve taught most of them over the years as well, but I’ve never really explored all that drama has to offer.
I’ve decided to designate this month as “New Genre November.” I will (mostly) take a break from my standard readings and devote more time to reading plays from as many top authors as I can.
This month's homepage quote comes from Tom Stoppard, one of the most prolific and widely respected playwrights of the past 50 years. I have read his Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, and seen its hilarious film adaptation with Tim Roth and Gary Oldman, but I intend to read more of his work along with many other pieces of drama.
I challenge you to take on a new literary challenge this month. You could read from a different genre, as I am, or you could tackle books from an author you've always avoided, or you could try writing in a different form. Do something unique in your English studies this month.
