I swear I didn’t plan this, but to my delight, as fate (or physics?) would have it, after making a reference to Stephen Hawking and his book on the complexities of the time-space continuum, a fascinating and mind-bending podcast also appeared this week. The silly, but very smart, staff from Cracked has combined the worlds of physics and pop culture in a conversation that explores a variety of movies--Interstellar, Back to the Future, The Matrix, The Terminator, Primer, The Fly, The Empire Strikes Back, Tarantino flicks, and many more—and the complicated thought experiments that can be derived by thoroughly exploring the scientific theories that support these film plots. This is like an “extended universe” master’s course. There is a heavy amount of adult language, so be aware as you listen. This discussion may make you go cross-eyed, but if you can embrace your inner nerdness (as I do on a nearly constant basis), you will enjoy it. What other thought experiments have you ever considered after checking out a particular movie or book?
