Over the weekend, Mises.org posted an insightful interview with Auburn University economics professor Liliana Stern, an immigrant from the Ukraine. This is 20 minutes every young person should hear. As recent polls have shown, 44% of Millennials believe socialism is better than capitalism. However, Dr. Stern describes what actual socialism looks like and how destructive it is as an economic system. Imagine not having access to anesthesia for a root canal. Imagine only being allowed to use water for two hours a day. Imagine having no freedom of press or speech. These are the realities of socialism. Dr. Stern offers a great reminder for how thankful we Americans should be for our liberties and resources. And she theorizes why socialism appears so attractive for today's students. Hint: the phrase "helicopter parent" makes an appearance, and she's spot on. It's always great to learn from other cultures, and you can't do much better than someone who escaped Soviet oppression.
