Take a look at this new article over at Inc.com about the American woman who won the recent NYC Marathon. In her post-race interview, she offered a few words of advice that everyone, and particularly students, should follow. She says that "patience" and "hard work" are the ultimate keys to success. We might automatically assume those are cliches or trite tips that only the privileged can use. But even though those words don't guarantee victory, or wealth, or fame, they are absolutely the best words for achieving improved life outcomes--for EVERYONE.
The only reason I have my ideal job today is because of patience and hard work. I waited a LONG time, making NO money, doing LOTS of unfulfilling work before getting to where I am. I had to study MANY years, and face MANY obstacles, to gain my education. I would not be the person I am today with out those three words.
While not every student is a great writer or great mathematician or great artist, everyone can improve. But it takes lots of time and effort. The sooner students understand that gains will likely not happen quickly or easily, the better off they will be. Apply these three words to your academic life, and other parts of your life too, and just see what amazing things your future will have in store.
