My doctoral research was an investigation into the relationship between American literature and Austrian economic theory (which is an interpretation of free-market actions and the classical liberal philosophy that drives them). Because these two fields appear to be so different, and because most literary study is overrun with virulently anti-free-market belief, I took advantage of a relatively untapped domain for my research and arguments. A website that explores these capitalistic ideas—namely, individualism, subjective value, entrepreneurship, and others—and their influence on artistic creation is The Literary Order, to my knowledge the only one of its kind that dares to integrate Austrian economics and literature. A few days ago, the site posted a quick review of a new book that I look forward to checking out, Loving Literature: A Cultural History. The site doesn’t post as often as I would like, but it does have a number of great articles to peruse, such as “Game Theory and Literature,” “Subjective Artistic Value,” and a survey of the best books and plays about business. If you know of other interesting and valuable interdisciplinary websites, I would love to hear about them!
