Today is the birthday of perhaps the greatest novelist of all time, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, born Nov. 11, 1821. No writer captures the conflicts of morality, philosophy, and society better. Celebrate this author this month by tackling one of his many renowned works.
The first section of Notes from Underground is one of my favorites. You can never go wrong with Crime and Punishment. The Brothers Karamazov may be a bit advanced if you've never read Dostoyevsky before, but it's certainly worth it. I'm also a fan of his novellas The Gambler and The Double. If you're short on time, his short stories "A Gentle Creature" or "The Dream of a Ridiculous Man" are a great introduction.
Dostoyevsky always gives your brain, as well as your soul, quite a workout. But if you can begin to appreciate him and his battles with the meaning of life, you are well on your way to a valuable education.
