I have been trying to come up with a more efficient and effective way to grade students’ papers for quite some time. I’ve used turnitin.com, but I find that it takes me forever; I’m faster just writing comments and making marks by hand. Most semesters, I’m grading nearly 100 students’ assignments. At anywhere between four and eight pages a pop, three to five times per semester, one can understand the need for efficiency when grading creeps into the thousands of pages in just a few short months. This week’s article from The Chronicle of Higher Education has me intrigued. The idea of doing a video review of each piece of student work seems like it could take a long time in producing. However, if a student would think such feedback more useful than traditional comments, then perhaps I would be willing to give it a shot. If anyone has used video responses for grading student writing assignments, I’d love to hear about your experiences. Should I embrace the technology?
