It's the start of a new month again, and that means a new message on the English Champion home page. The quote for the month of March is inspired by the report this week of a newly discovered Sherlock Holmes short story, found when some lucky guy was cleaning out his attic.
Holmes and Watson are probably the most famous duo in literary history, and like all English Champions, they used their brains to become successful. While Holmes was solving crimes and having adventures the rest of us may never have, his methodology is an important model to follow for not only English Champions, but students of all fields.
It is always our job as readers and thinkers to look more closely at texts, as well as the world around us. Many of us read in the form of seeing a text, but do not read closely enough to truly observe all that a text has to offer. We should try to learn as much as we can from a text, both about whatever is happening to the characters in the text, but also about ourselves. The whole point of literature is to communicate truths about the human experience. An English Champion is one who leads the way in discovering those truths and sharing them with others. Challenge yourself this month to look closer. Don't just see. Observe.
