When the first trailer debuted for the November release of Creed, the latest installment in the never-ending Rocky series, I felt underwhelmed. As one of the most devoted fans to the original 1976 film (and most of its sequels), I had the feeling this new take, in which Apollo Creed’s son (played by Michael B. Jordan) emerges as a fighter in his father’s image, was drifting away from the ethos of the series. While there are obviously supporting players in Rocky Balboa’s universe, the story is always about Rocky. I was curious about this diversion, but not excited.
But a new trailer was released on Monday. And now I’m excited.
Yes, that's Clair Huxtable. Yes, this appears to have echoes of Rocky V (the worst in the series), with Rocky as trainer and advisor. And yes, I'm stumped as to why Apollo Creed, who was super-rich when he was alive, somehow left his family in poverty. But this version shows more clearly the connection and friendship between Stallone and Jordan, and it seems to remind us why we fell in love with the marble-mouthed bruiser in the first place. Nothing’s impossible when you’ve got nothing left to lose. Gray sweatpants, American flag trunks, chickens on the loose, and of course, Philly. Is that a training montage I feel coming on? Can’t wait for Thanksgiving! Check it out...
