For you Communication or Business majors out there, this short article was pretty interesting. A discussion appeared a few days ago over at The Atlantic in which a number of marketing experts gave their opinion on the most effective advertising campaign of all time. Of course Apple’s “1984” commercial is on the list, as well as LBJ’s “Daisy” ad. But there are newer campaigns also, from companies such as Red Bull and Dos Equis.
As a child of the ‘80s and ‘90s, my vote is for any television ad that starred Michael Jordan in his prime. Whether it was Gatorade’s “Like Mike” ad or Nike’s “Mars Blackmon” commercials or Jordan’s shootout with Larry Bird over a McDonald’s value meal, everything Jordan did worked, and he became the most recognizable person (not just athlete) in the world.
Jordan’s charisma and talent, and his connection with iconic companies, affected the business world in fundamental ways and changed the way we see athletes forever. Despite his immense wealth he accrued during his playing career, Jordan’s endorsements have made him the wealthiest sports figure in American history. One could argue that no one person has influenced advertising so dramatically.
That being said, the kid dressed up like Darth Vader a few years ago was pretty great. What ad campaign would you put on the list?
