In my MLA update this week, there was a link to a website I hadn’t seen before. Literature, Medicine, and Medical Humanities is an interesting site that highlights the interdisciplinary move underway in which scientific fields, such as medicine, are connecting to the humanities. As I have stated in posts just this week, nearly every industry is seeking employees that are well-rounded and adaptable. I encourage all you college students out there to increase your basic skills in a variety of areas in order to be more marketable for future jobs.
This site offers current research and techniques that show the increasing effects art, literature, culture, and interpersonal communication have on the medical profession. The site has a variety of resources for further investigation, including a link to a great article, “The Rise of the Medical Humanities,” that came out a few weeks back.
We must remember that amid the scientific and technological expertise required by the medical profession, it is still one in which people remain the primary focus. The humanities are all about studying people, and it’s good to see the integration of seemingly diverse fields for the betterment of humans everywhere.
