One of my favorite all-time authors is Willa Cather, not only for her ability to describe without being verbose, but also for her depiction of the American ethos. However, her talents went beyond the literary. She was also one of most astute economically-minded writers of the twentieth century. She knew the power of the individual, the family, the marketplace, and the transactions that take place among all of them. She had a clear understanding of what literature is: it's both business and art. And there's nothing wrong with defending either.
